India has over three million NGOs - one for every 600 people. However, only a very small minority of these, in contrast to their corporate counterparts, ever reach scale. This may be surprising given that large investments flow into this sector every year. According to a report by the Ministry of Home Affairs, non-profits in India received INR 115 billion in FY 2011-12 through foreign funds alone, and a total of INR 945.20 billion from 1993-94 to 2009-10. While funding is critical, organizations also need external expertise and support to build strong institutions that can scale for greater impact - and intermediaries in the development sector are best suited to bridge this gap. Dasra surveyed the sector to create this handbook of non-profit intermediaries to serve as a resource for non-profit organizations looking to scale.
