Universities and colleges are producers of knowledge and play an important role in shaping culture, policy, political agendas, and in many ways, the flow of resources to communities. To increase the potential for those living in rural communities, as well as the vibrancy of these communities, researchers can and should center rural voices, ground the production of knowledge in these voices, and address power imbalances in research and practice. Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) play a crucial role in this strategy for empowering rural communities. In our latest research brief, the authors explore how rural MSIs and approaches to community based participatory research can be used to better understand MSIs' nature and practices.

Local food systems are widely regarded as go-to examples for fostering rural-urban and farmer-consumer connections, but they require significant investments in stakeholder networks and the institutional infrastructure necessary to sustain and expand them. In our latest research brief, authors Rich Pirog and Marcus A. Coleman focus on local food systems as vehicles for collaboration and racial equity among multiple stakeholders and networks. They highlight examples of statewide, regional, and national initiatives to illustrate the power of networks to foster deeper levels of collaboration and reciprocity. When organizations are prepared for this sensitive topic, they can serve an even more valuable role in ensuring that these communities feel safe and prepared for whatever tomorrow may bring.

Framework for Community Leadership by a Community Foundation

In 2007 -- 2008, CFLeads convened the National Task Force on Community Leadership to define community leadership from a uniquely community foundation perspective. The result: Framework for Community Leadership by a Community Foundation. The Framework incorporates levels of building blocks essential to consistent, effective leadership. This Framework serves as a foundational document on community leadership for the field. In 2012-2013, CFLeads convened the Cultivating Community Engagement (CCE) Panel, made up of 34 philanthropic leaders, researchers, government officials and people from neighborhood and community groups who have worked closely with residents. After deliberating over the course of nearly a year, the Panel issued a Call to Action for more resident engagement by community foundations and made recommendations for important changes in community foundation practice. This call for more resident engagement resulted in the Panel's updating of the Framework for Community Leadership by a Community Foundation.
